Third generation autologous chondrocyte implantation is a good treatment option for athletic persons
Purpose: Autologous chondrocyte implantation is the established method for the treatment of joint cartilage damage. However, until now has not been established that autologous chondrocyte implantation is the appropriate procedure for the treatment of cartilage defects in the athletics. The purpose of this study was to analyze if the third-generation autologous chondrocyte implantation is an appropriate treatment for people with a disability athletic full cartilage of the knee joint.
Methods: A total of 84 patients were treated with autologous chondrocyte implantation third generation (NOVOCART® 3D). The time the average follow-up was 8 years (5-14). Sports activities measured by the UCLA activity score and Tegner Activity Scale before the onset of knee pain and postoperative in yearly clinical evaluations. 41 athletic and non-athletic 43 (UCLA-Cut-off: 7; Tegner Activity Scale-Cut-off: 4) were analyzed. Patients reported the results captured using a subjective IKDC, Koos, Lysholm score and VAS score on movement.
Results: Patients reported results (IKDC, VAS at rest, in motion VAS) showed a significant improvement (p <0.001) postoperatively. Athletic man showed significantly better results than non-athletic person in the score results were analyzed (IKDC: p <0.01, Koos: p <0.01, Lysholm score: p <0.01). 96.4% of patients can return to sports and more than 50% refundable or exceed their preinjury level of exercise. The remaining patients were downgraded by a median of two points on UCLA- and 2.5 on the Tegner Activity Scale.
The shift from high-impact sports to show active and moderate or mild activity found. In addition, it was shown that preoperative UCLA score and Tegner Activity Scale was significantly correlated with the patients reported postoperative results.
Conclusions: Autologous chondrocyte implantation is a treatment option that is suitable for athletic person with full-thickness cartilage defects in the knee. Back to sports activities is possible, but it includes a shift from high-impact exercise for less strenuous activities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the body composition of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I female soccer player with the position and the season. One hundred and seventy-five female athletes are categorized by the forward position (n = 47), midfielder (n = 51), defender (n = 57), and the keeper (n = 20). A dual X-ray absorptiometry scanning assessed percent body fat, total lean mass, total fat mass, lean mass of the arms and legs and fat mass and visceral adipose tissue. Total and leg lean mass significantly lowered in the winter off-season compared to all the other seasons, and overall lean mass was significantly higher in the summer season of the pre-season (p <0.01).
