The purpose of this study was to detangle the relationship between attention, working-memory (focusing on the control and functional capacity), and sports performance throughout athletic skills. In particular, the mediating effect of working-memory-control and work-capacity memory and attention on the performance of the relationship will be investigated, and whether these effects differ across skill athletes.
A sample of 359 athletes (Mage = 18.91 ± SD = 1.01; 54.87% male) with a variety of athletic skills (beginner n = 99, n = 92 amateur, elite n = 87 and n super- elite = 81) completed the battery of neurocognitive tasks assessing attention, working-memory-control, working-memory capacity, and the motor cognitive task of interest (eg, basketball free throw task). Athletes with better skills performed on the attention task, working-memory-control and working-memory-capacity. Structural equation modeling results showed a positive relationship between measures of cognitive and sports performance. In particular, working-memory-control and working-memory capacity of mediated attention and exercise performance relationship.
In addition, the invariant testing showed a greater effect for those with more athletic skills. These findings provide a better understanding of how attention and control and the capacity of working-memory functions interact to predict performance.
